5 Mistakes to avoid as a Prospective Influencer

Influencer marketing is that subtle blend of marketing and PR. Think of it this way; why go about telling people how great you are when you can get someone that looks like your target audience to speak on your behalf. Gone are the days where people and brands relied heavily on celebrities to make their products and services popular.

The growing number of social media users particularly on Instagram and just recently TikTok has shown that people are more empowered to pursue their passions, create content around them, connect with like minded people and build a community that resonate with their ideals. So yes! You do not need to be a celebrity to be an influencer, but before you go jumping on the bandwagon, here are some mistakes to avoid when considering becoming an influencer.

Not doing your research

As an influencer you do not want to go in blind. Not understanding who your audience are and where they live on social media street can damage any successes you wish to see as an influencer. It is very important to do your research to see if people would be interested in the type of content you want to put out. Your research could be anything, from putting a survey out to gather information, regarding the niche you want to enter, or visiting the pages of other influencers to see what they are doing right and adapting that to build your own style. This is also a great way to come up with some content ideas.

Just Winging It

Having a good content plan, means being intentional about your content. Planning ahead of time, allows you to think through your posts and how they will be influencing your target audience. Also you must not underestimate the importance of a coherent feed this can only be achieved through a well thought out content plan.

Buying Followers

This one can backfire really quickly, especially when instagram runs its routine bots cleanup. It also does no favours to your personal brand as an influencer. Followers are not built overnight, they are fruits of a healthy content plan, engaging with the right people and consistency.

Downplaying the Importance of Tone and voice

Your tone and voice are a reflection of your personal brand. Do you want to come across as  playful, motivational, formal, joyful, sad or even critical? your audience must be able to perceive brand voice without too much effort. Again, research on the right words to use so you are confident you are portraying the right tone and voice through your posts. Your tone and voice should reflect easily through your content and remain consistent as you grow.

Using low grade Pictures

They say a picture says a thousand words, so if you are going to take one make sure the quality is good because people would rather see a thousand words than read one. You can cheat the system a little bit by using free apps, such as snapseed, photoshop express and illustrator to refine your pictures but investing in a good camera or phone for your pictures can cut your work in half when it comes to editing.
